Self-Myofascial Release Essentials

By the end of this module students should be able to safely and effectively use and teach essential basic use of Self-Myofascial Release or SMR.

Segen’s medical dictionary (2011) defines myofascial release as, “A type of soft tissue therapy used in osteopathy to release physically restricted musculoskeletal groups. It is believed that chronic tension and trauma cause the fascia, which envelop muscle, to become fixed in a particular position, known as a myofascial restriction. Manipulation of the myofascial group is believed to resolve the restriction”. In other words, myofascial release is a form of manual (hands-on) therapy to increase extensibility of tight and restricted fascia.

Fitness Instructors, Personal Trainers, Group Exercises Instructors, Physiotherapists or any exercise or health practitioner that wants to safely and effectively utilise SMR within their coaching, classes or programming.

Learning Objectives

List and practically apply the safety considerations of using SMR
  • Understand key areas such as myofascial release, trigger point rolling and more
  • Teach, analyse and correct technique of selected SMR exercises for different parts of the body.

  • Apply and integrate SMR exercises into a comprehensive and effective training programme.
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving flexibility and recovery program design
  • Specialized understanding of different types of foam rollers and which is correct for the client
  • Increased knowledge of a diverse collection of stretching types as well as flexibility development
